What is magnesium salicylate?

Magnesium salicylate is a salicylate (sa-LIS-il-ate). It works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain, fever, and inflammation. Magnesium salicylate is used to treat mild-to-moderate pain, fever, inflammatory conditions, and pain, swelling, or stiffness associated with arthritis.

What is this medicine used for?

This medicine is in a class of drugs called salicylates. It is used to reduce fever and relieve pain and inflammation. It may be used to treat arthritis.

Salicylates can cause serious side effects such as Reye’s syndrome in children and teens with viral infections such as the flu or chickenpox. Ask your healthcare provider before giving this medicine to children with flu symptoms or poxlike skin blisters.

How to Use This Medicine?

  • Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

If a dose is missed:

  • Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • You should not take this medicine with a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin®), probenecid (Probalan®), or methotrexate (Trexall®). Make sure your doctor knows if you are using medicines to treat seizures (such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, or Dilantin®) or a diuretic ("water pill") called spironolactone (Aldactazide®, Aldactone®).
  • Your doctor will need to know if you are using a diabetes medicine that you take by mouth, such as chlorpropamide, glimepiride, glipizide, glyburide, tolbutamide, Amaryl®, Diabeta®, Glucotrol®, or Micronase®. You should not take medicines that contain magnesium, such as antacids (Gaviscon®, Maalox®, Mylanta®) or nutritional supplements, without asking your doctor.

What are the side effects of magnesium salicylate?

  • Magnesium salicylate, like other NSAIDs, may cause a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms can include hives, facial swelling, asthma (wheezing), and shock.
  • Stomach bleeding may occur.
