Thiamine hydrochloride: Application and Side effects

Jan 9,2024

Application of Thiamine hydrochloride

Thiamine Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of thiamine, a vitamin essential for aerobic metabolism, cell growth, transmission of nerve impulses and acetylcholine synthesis. Upon hydrolysis, thiamine hydrochloride is phosphorylated by thiamine diphosphokinase to form active thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), also known as cocarboxylase. TPP is a coenzyme for many enzymatic activities involving fatty acid, amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism.

Thiamine hydrochloride has a wide range of uses in medicine, food, chemicals and cosmetics. Thiamine hydrochloride has the ability to reduce the production of oxidative stress, increase myocardial contractility and enhance antioxidant defences, and is used in the treatment of athlete's foot and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It is also used as a flavouring agent for food and as a nutritional supplement. In the chemical field, it is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of amide compounds. It is used in cosmetics as a skin conditioner. In addition, it is used as a human and veterinary vitamin (enzyme cofactor) for the prevention and/or cure of blacktongue and PELLAGRA, and as an inert ingredient in non-food pesticide products approved by the FDA.

Side effects of Thiamine hydrochloride

Side effects of Thiamine hydrochloride include flushing, hives, itching, weakness, sweating, nausea, restlessness, diarrhoea and stomach pain. In rare cases, it can cause a severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction). Seek medical attention if you experience sudden swelling of the lips, mouth, throat or tongue; shortness or difficulty breathing; tightness in the throat or difficulty swallowing; skin, tongue or lips turning blue, grey or pale, drowsiness or dizziness.
